Tooth-Coloured Fillings vs. Silver Fillings

There are two main types of filling materials used in dentistry – tooth-coloured and silver

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. A filling material that matches your tooth colour is used at the front of the mouth due to aesthetic concerns.  However, as one moves to the back of the mouth, where strength is more important than cosmetics, the conversation of white vs. silver filling becomes a more complicated one.

Dr Delac believes that the silver filling still has its place in modern dentistry

There may be situations where a silver filling is a superior option to the modern white filling, whilst there are also situations where the white filling is superior. The table below gives you a snapshot of what needs to be considered when making a decision on material selection of your filling:

Tooth-Coloured Filling Silver Filling
Cosmetics X
Bonds to the tooth X
Strength X
Less complicated X
Quicker appointment X
Less Cost X
Preserves tooth structure X
Small cavities X
Longer lasting X
Less food trapping X
Awkward shaped cavities X

At the end of the day, the decision for what material is used for you will always be your decision.  Dr Delac will always give a recommendation of what is best for you and then you can make your decision.
