Jaw Growth and Teeth Crowding

As a child transitions from their baby teeth to adult teeth, Dr Delac always monitors this development…

Dr Delac looks at the size of children’s jaws in relation to the size of their teeth.  A common problem that he sees is bigger teeth in smaller jaws leading to teeth crowding.  Most parents will notice if their child has teeth crowding. Dr Delac can refer your child to a specialist dentist called an orthodontist, who has three years of post-graduate training specialising in this area, to deal with your child’s teeth crowding problems.

One thing parents won’t often notice will be any problems with the way the upper and lower teeth meet…

Any discrepancies in size and position between the upper and lower jaws will lead to a bad bite and problems later in life. However, while a child is still growing, there is an opportunity to intervene and harness the growth that is still ahead to mould changes in the jaws that allow the bite to be improved.  This, too, would be done by an orthodontist.

Dr Delac will refer your child early to the orthodontist where all the options of treatment are available.  If he refers too late, the opportunity to fix the problem may be lost.  If adults wish to fix problems with their bite that are caused by problems with jaw size, they need surgery.  In childhood, most jaw problems can be fixed by an orthodontist.
